Weekly Update - June 13, 2012
This weeks highlights are up here.
We also got some shots of the Venus/Sun transit event last week in this album, and Saturday's Video Log is here:
Conditions have been really great out, surprising to me considering how warm our winter was...I thought for sure we'd be burning up by now. Had a few groups in the area...R1/R6 guys, SV riders, etc. last week. This week/weekend is the big Combat Veterans Nationals at Fontana Village, and the Cherohala Challenge annual bicycle ride across the Dragon and then over the Cherohala Skyway is Saturday. They should all be off the Dragon by noon, so give them some space and check out the show if you're around Saturday morning...there are some very fit individuals if ya know what I mean...say no more, say no more.

Wuz interested in KB's brake comments in the vid. You always want good brakes and tires.
Have no idea how to make good time on a bike. But on 4 wheels I'm faster on the Dragon if I lay off the brakes (except for a tap here and there to adjust entry speed). If you have average skill, this gives you fewer things to manage on entry. Most corners on the Dragon are tight and close together. And if you "back up the corner," you can get into the throttle sooner, at or a tad before the apex, and then float the car into the next bend, concentrating on your late-apex.
Re: the California Spider in this week's highlights: those look like Dayton wires, not Borranis. The chrome trim accents on the scoop and side vents look thicker than what PininFarina did.
I ain't sayin' it ain't the Real Deal, but why would you drive something this rare that looks like a "tribute?"
Love the highlights like always. My only beef with the new format is the inability to go full res and for those pictures where the details matter such as license plates, etc. Great shots as always though!
Caleb: There is an "expand" option in the upper-right corner of each shot on Facebook, but at the moment it doesn't make it much bigger. They were never any bigger on here either though. Starting next week I have it setup to double the resolution so they will show up much larger for everyone if you choose to use the "Expand" feature on there.
I personnally do not use facebook because of my poor social skills but am still able to view the pics.
It works at least as well for me as this blog did in the past.
Whole lotta nothing going on now.
Maybe we can start something. I can't do much to hold up the biker end of the canoe (mixed metaphor!). Only thing that moved me to post last week was the faux Ferrari. But I enjoyed the Facebook post of the guy who said "No, it's STILL not OK..." to the pic of the girls standing up in the sunroof of the Volvo.
I will be there in August thankfully.
Have a good ride! How will I pick your bike out in the "daily rushes" (as the movie people call them)?
October for me. My rule is "not after April 30 and not before October 1, Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday only." But I would break it if I had to.
RC 51/Dark red carbon fiber helmet on the correct side of the double yellow !
@RC 51 Mark: I'll look for it. Which week are you going up?
Not sure yet.
Gotta say I just broke my rule and looked at the facebook photos mostly to see this guy at the top of this page.
I read a sampling of the posts and sure enough I wanted to PUKE.
It has now become homogenized.
So many good things fade away,I will miss it.
To all you facebook drones, put on some gear dummies and try to not be such tools with your gay ass posts! Fade to black.
I am going to be down next weekend.I will try to enojoy my freedoms in this great country, except, ofcours,e in states that want to be your nanny and tell you how to dress. Maybe they will try to tell you how to eat next?
oh, wait, some are. Stop giving up your freedoms because you think, "well that doesn't effect me, go ahead". The next freedom to go will be one you enjoy and the rest of us won't care anymore. My wearing gear, or lack of, doesn't hurt you. Keep bitch'n about the line crossers because they can hurt you.
Enjoy the weekend, Martvol. Shoot us a pre-post, if you remember, when you go in August, RC 51 Mark. The new Reviewing Stand at the TotD Store (across from DGMR) looks like fun. After 4 passes, my tongue is hanging out like a Gap Pup's. Good place for a 24 oz. or smaller iced tea. ;-)
Truckin, Got My Chips Cashed In!
Just wanted to say hello to y'all
HoWWWWWWW-DEE!
Thanks, 2WO, for a reminder to burn a CD for the Interstates. You made a very nice selection too, like Empress Nympho did in History of the World. Tunes get turned off on the Dragon, though: can't walk and chew gum at the same time. ;-)
"As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good, with God you're never alone
He feels so tired as he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said
Sky Pilote
Sky Pilote
How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never, reach the sky"
A little Eric Burdon and The Animals for ya..
The wisdom of Scott Pruett: "Daytona Prototypes is about the drivers. American LeMans is about the cars." Never thought of it quite that way, but 'zactly right.
06/27 highlights:
1) Hope Lori is OK, KB.
2) That Formula Ford crash on Chasing the Dragon looked CLOSE ENOUGH. Even stills made me suck my breath in. Glad he was OK.
Whats goin on ?
Dunno exactly. May be on his personal FB page. Killgurl apparently not in serious danger, but KB took her to the hospital on Wednesday. So sez Killboy FB page. Home already?

I think Facebook gives KB more exposure with all the sharing and liking people can do, but it sure has killed his blog.
I was through several times today. I think I am partially melted.
Hey, Martvol, props to you. It was 95 here yesterday. Must have been the same on the Tail. How were your passes?
Took a 250 mile road trip myself--in my cage, with the a/c on high. The bikers I saw (plenty) were doing OK, but nobody stopped except to hydrate. Then they got right back into that sticky breeze again.
I don't think there was too much traffic. Ceals Gap parking lot was maybe 1/3 full the most I seen. Have been down when it was full.
I think I did OK, had fun and the bike isn't trashed.
Coming down from Kansas it was drive 40 miles, get water, drive another 40 get water and gas, repeat. I think I still got behind on the water too.
The tar they seal the cracks on the roads in Northern Georgia was like WD 40. Scared the crap outta me about a hundred times.
I agree with Martvol in the previous comment.
I hear Lori is seemingly okay and that is good news.
Good news about Lori, RC 51 Mark.
Yeah, the heat and tar &c. you and Martvol mention remind me of some of the reasons I gave up riding years ago.
I fantasize about a sportbike (ain't gonna happen). And if it did, I'd be ATGATT. Needed for those tar strips. But the weather would have me thinking MGSOT (minimal gear, some of the time).
Illinois does not have a helmet law (dumb). I saw very few helmets yesterday, and could kinda see their point--at least in this weather.
Go up 129 from CROT a couple of turns on Google earth and Killboy is sitting on one of the first corners.
Kinda cool.
I kinda see KB's point, finally. Decided to take my own blog "live" a couple of days ago. Published a long (text) prose today, with about 20 pictures. Took seemingly FOREVER to save and post. If his experience with 200 high-res pix on blogspot.com is similar, he could hit "enter" and be back from dinner out before it finished loading.
Hey, RC 51 Mark: surfed last week's "daily rushes" (sportbikes); couldn't pick you out. Hope you had some great passes. October seems a long way off: I have DWS (Dragon Withdrawl Syndrome).
I was in N Georgia, Gap will be August.
