Weekly Update - July 8, 2009
As always, photos from the last 6 years are available in Our Store here. These are some of the highlights from last week.
The TDOT dedication last week was a big hit, with lots of great comments posted and a welcomed response from the guys out there working in summer heat. Here's the official reply:
"Thank you for your e-mail.
Maintenance personnel are working to improve the safety on US 129, State Route 115 in conjunction with the findings of a roadside safety audit that was completed by a safety task team last fall. The suggested improvements were to pave all the pull-offs to eliminate rock and debris from entering the road and construct two berms alongside the highway.
Other TDOT crews will be improving signs, road striping and other directional markings. This project was made available via funding from the Federal Highway Administration and locations were chosen by accident data and police reports.
I am happy that you were pleased. Our department seldom receives such nice comments and we appreciate your acknowledgment of our efforts. I will forward your e-mail to supervisors so that employees involved in this effort know of your kind words."
I'll leave it at the bottom of the page this week for anyone who missed it last week. (*gasp!*)
Pretty slow last weekend, which I kind of expected. We hear a lot of people saying they've heard the weekends and particularly holiday weekends are busy, and the weekday is the time to go, so now the weekdays are sometimes busier than weekends. LEOs didn't get the memo though, and they were out in force Saturday without much to do. Sunday was kinda nasty/rainy, so really slow day there.
This weekend the only rally on the calendar is TN Mustang Club's 3rd annual. Traffic is anyone's guess, weather looks good though, albeit hot, so be sure to stay hydrated!
Bad news from yesterday...seems a lady riding solo lost control and went off the mountain and didn't survive. I'm sure her family and friends are devastated right now, and our thoughts are certainly with them. Perhaps they can take some comfort in knowing she was doing something she loved when she passed away.
A bit of good news also, in that one of the crashes thought to be a fatality last week turned out not to be fatal. The rider was air-lifted late in the day and is expected to recover, so that makes 2 for the year, not 3. Let's stop it right about there, waddya say? Y'all be careful out there.
On to the highlights!
