Sorting photos, hang in there folks. Here's a teaser shot to hold you over for a couple of days. (take it easy on the guy, he totally owned up to his mistake and was an all around nice fella)

Just out of Morbid Curiosity, not ragging on the guy mind you, but...

How the Hell do you end up perpendicular to the road in the wrong lane in the first place?

-Mr. Pete

Simple, looks like the transision from oh shit, butt cheeks tightining, slam on the rear brake then quick release before full stop . end resulting in a high side.

hope he is ok
boss vmax

He blew a right-hander, running out into the wrong lane...saw the SUV coming and was aiming for the shoulder of the road but didn't make it. Good thing too, that's a major drop. The SUV was stopped at the time of impact, the bike was nearly stopped. Everyone came out fine and he rode off, but the shot looks wild don't it? =)

That is a keeper for the scary action shot file.

Glad the most fall out is ego, and some minor body and paint repairs. Not everyone is so lucky. The dude could be dead right now if not for the luck and guardian angel he apparently had.

i guess if you have the balls to actualy go as fast as he was you might appreciate how swinging a corner a liitle wide is no big deal until your rear brake goes out, you grab the front which straightens you up into the other lane then try to go around the other side and just barely miss it, but he is glad his gaurdian angel decided to ride with, and definatly glad those pesky porkers didn't show. thanks yall, we'll see you next weekend with some rear brakes, hope you keep up! -LuckyR1-

Well Well Well - its DUMBASSES like this that Ruin Your INSURANCE RATES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darryl Cannon aka "killboy" said...

Wrong. They swapped info and the person at fault is paying for damages. No insurance hassles, no cops necessary. Imagine that.

Anonymous said...

And lets give credit where credit is due. Kudo's to the *CAGER* that was driving heads up and came to a stop before this little scene played out.

Anonymous said...

Blowing corners doesn't take balls it takes misjudgement, which happens to everyone at some point or another.

The "balls" you speak of is called stupidity and is dangerous to yourself and everyone riding near you. If You're "swinging the corner a little wide" and ending up in the wrong lane then you are riding over your ability, and if I have a head-on with you because you "swung a little wide" into my lane I'm gonna be pissed.

I was merely commenting on how, if i didn't know better, it looks like he would've had to been turning into a sidestreet or something to be completely perpendicular to the road like that. When Darryl said that he was aiming for the shoulder my question was answered, but thanks for flamin

That is a really wild shot, you guys never cease to amaze.

Yes, Johnny on the spot you guys are....
Actually caught one of the many morons I saw this weekend racing on the Gap cheat death this time....Dig the contortions of that guy. No excuse for crossing over...and not a race track or clown exhibition arena like I saw, period......Yes,I said period.

Not Flaming, but come on Fella, take it easy out there with no gear on! I dont know how the driver reacted, but I would of been very pissed after I found out you were O.K.! You screwed up, it was your falt, and you crossed the line...Not cool! Im just glad it wasnt me that you hit!

Oh and about the rear brake, I'd have to see that!

Anonymous said...

Of course the rear brakes dont work when your feet are staight up in the air....Your Lucky Dude, now slow down!!

Why does every asshole that comes to this site act like like they,ve never made a mistake on a bike??? Oh i forgot you all pros and you all ride like Matt Maladin

No, they are tired of guys like this ruining the place for everyone else who goes up there and uses their head and rides within their limits. It isn't a race track last I checked.

Good to know the guy was ok. I was at the Dragon the weekend this happened. Yes i rode a little faster than most people, but I did not ride over my limit and was wearing full leather suit, boots, gloves, and helmet (which is more than most people i saw riding the Dragon) I did see plenty of cars and even a few bikes cross the line. Drive safe everyone and have fun!

Darryl is so good with the camera he even managed to catch this squid's good side.

I won't rag on someone for making a mistake and binning it at the Gap, but I will gladly rag on someone for being so stupid as to ride through the gap in jeans and a sweatshirt. Buy some frigging gear you moron!

Anonymous said...

For all you riders that don't make mistakes are sissy's when it comes to riding. You're scared of the machine that you're riding. Can't handle it. The guy made a mistake. Leave it at that. And the THP guys who talking smack are too scared too even get on one.

Anonymous said...

Or maybe they realize that its a public street, and that it only takes 1 mistake to end your life or the life of another innocent person? Let alone the fact that if youre making mistakes on a regular basis, youre riding above your limit and in a wreckless manner, which isnt going to get you anything more than a trip to the ER and a fat bike repair bill.

If you want to become a better rider, you work on being smooth and having proper technique, not forcing speed and riding sloppy because of it.

But before you do anything, you get a set of leathers...

Anonymous said...

My brother got sent to the ER due to a guy that rode past his limit on a Heritage and crossed the line and hit him head on Sunday.

Some people should stick to the straight roads.

About 8 shots in the series, although the last two are the ones that count I suppose. The shot after this one is pretty wild also.

The gravel road from Cade's Cove to Deal's Gap, Parson's Branch, is still closed. I had heard they were working on clearing it at one time, but it is obviously low priority. Fine with me personally. It was the only in-road into Deal's Gap, and cars would drag gravel and dirt out into the Gap coming out of there.

Sissies,Morons,Chickens: Some real intelligence there. Irrelevant! Get it through your thick skulls! The road is not a race track! The road is not where man tests machine! Take it to a race track. Ones ability to push something to it's limits equals an idiot in my lane sooner or later. So,You are wrong! And that mentallity is what causes excessive enforcement up there, and bad PR. Fact. So thanks to guys like you for ruining things for the majority of smart people!

Deals Gap is a public road, sometimes we all need to remeber that. I am guilty also of going way too fast there sometimes.

Anonymous said...

call me what you want but i get through the gap just fine and i dont even dream of touching the rear break! Why would you use it? It is only trouble in my opinion!

Anonymous said...

I dont know my self... who uses it? We all find ourselves toe-ing the line once in a while but why the rear breaking excuse? Dosnt add up! Tap the front and lean harder..... (1.6 g's) oh yeah you couldnt without knee sliders.... well then get a suit dumbass! Your comment was that you were riding fast... get fast gear. It helps avoid problems.

Anonymous said...

Personally, I would rather slow down than take a bad line. Nothing feels worse than and makes me more upset than taking a bad line.

Sweet Pic Killboy!

No shit talk from me, I'm just glad everything worked out fine and that we are not reading this in the newspaper!

Oh yea, for all of you bad mouthing this guy, are you saying you have never done anything wrong in your life??? And the gear issue, I do agree that gear should be worn, but also, maybe it's not in his budget, who knows?

Anonymous said...

If i dont have on knee sliders then i dont go knee down.... if you cant afford the gear then dont ride like you have it on, right? Slow down till your skills and gear match your riding style. AND... i definately dont use a rear break on the gap.

Noah at OES Accessories.com said...

Hey buddy, I'm glad you rode away from this and there were no hassles with the cops. Please, please try to learn to use just your front brake for now, as the back brake is useless when compared to the front. It might be tough to get used to and feel strange, but you will have much beter control. Once you learn to use it, the front brake will get you through the turns more smoothly, too, because it actually gets the front of the bike settled in and planted before you turn the bike in, and keeps the front from "pogo-ing" in the turn. Don't be discouraged from learning by the name calling, mostly everyone has crossed the lane due to a mistake. Just remember..
if you slide into the other lane or the ditch, you have exceded the machine's limit, and if you roll upright into the other lane or ditch, you have exceded your limits. Good luck with it!

Anonymous said...

For all of the people stating that the sport bikes run through the gap too fast and the THP is going to fix it. The Harleys are much more effective at keeping the speed down than any police enforcement; I have never seen a motorcycle slow down Car and Truck traffic as much as the Hogs clogging the gap this weekend. Dont they have sturgis and the straight roads that their bikes can handle?

I was thinking this weekend, after my buddy crashed his Buell up there. We all should pay $20 a year to the "KillBoy Crash Fund". This fund could be used to support the TNHP in crash site clean-up and down/injured-rider-pick-up. I hear them, TNHP, say that to come up on the Dragon to survey a wreck is costing them big bucks they dont have. If we all paid a small price upfront that might go a long way to making sure the Dragon stays open to us. I would pay $20 bucks, and maybe get a "Dragon Suporter" sticker to boot, to keep the Dragon open and good will with the TNHP and the Ambulance crews. Yearly surpluses could go towards purchasing Slow Flags for KillBoy's crew to use instead of spray paint if there is any debris in the road and stuff like that.

Anonymous said...

Hey Guys,
We were at the gap this weekend and saw our fair share of wrecks not on the dragon, its a matter of caution around that area. If you aren't up there all the time then chances are you don't know ever dip turn and rock in the road so use a little extra caution and be happy that this one turned out ok instead of at the funneral home...

Darryl Cannon aka "killboy" said...

We do not use spray paint to mark the road for accidents, we use sidewalk chalk or sandstone rocks on the side of the road.

I do have several orange safety flags that were bought for the sole purpose of marking hazards on the Gap. They were only about $4 each and they are pretty effective.

Taking up a donation to cover the costs of TNHP trips to the Gap is more complicated than you'd think. I'm pretty sure they can't just roll funds into their accounts, there are strict procedures for handling finances in any government-funded branch.

A more practical solution would be to discourage calling the police up there for minor accidents. If anyone even remotely needs an ambulance, by all means, call one. But if everyone is fine, try to handle the repairs personally. The TNHP REALLY doesn't want you moving the crashed vehicles, but I have known people to take their crashed bike to the nearest town and call the police for an accident report citing a lack of phone service in the Gap.

Anonymous said...

After reading Twist of the Wrist, I'm pretty convinced the only way to effectively master these skills so that they become instinct, is at the track. That's why I am signing up for track days, the only safe way to practise what Keith Code preaches. Do you want animals, gravel, on-coming traffic, blind corners, narrow lanes, etc. to be your test-bed?

>>>(take it easy on the guy, he totally owned up to his mistake and was an all around nice fella)

Ha, ha, Keith, as if. Posting a pic like on your front page at the top like that is like putting the poor soul in a coffin, driving a nail through, and turning up the heat as far as it will go at the crematorium, LOL.

We did not call the cops for my friend. We were able to replace his front foot peg with his rear and he was able to ride it out of there. He has been whining about his ribs and wrist ever since! I would like to thank a guy named Charlie from S.C. for helping me get my Buddy up and going, and for offering to pick his bike up on his trailer if it could not be riden off the Dragon. How cool is that for a stranger to offer?

Anyone have any info on the various victims from this past weekend? Guy on 28 near Fontana sunday, riders on the Cherohala (saw a big burn spot with debris near mm10) and cruiser wreck on Gap sunday afternoon?

Well thats cool that he is nice, but he still goofed up, and wrecked into another car in the other lane! If a car was to do that, and the guy was a nice guy, it wouldnt matter, cause some of you would find out were the guy lived, break in his house and shoot him between the eyes for crossing the line!
Once again, take it easy out there, you are pretty much a naked guy out riding with no gear...real cool! lol...Amatures

Anonymous said...

"Too bad this rider didn't get flattened."

That's a horrible thing to say. We've all made mistakes... whether it be on the bike or in a cage. Obviously, some mistakes are worse than others. He was man enough, however, to own up to what he did. Hopefully he'll learn from it as well.

I was there this weekend, as I am every holiday weekend I can get away. I didn't witness this particular incident, but it doesn't surprise me. Many riders really do think it's the race track, or at least a place where lawlessness abounds. There are simply too many riders up there on a holiday weekend for the police to make a dent in what is going on, and people take advantage of that. Having said that, admittedly I ride aggressively too. But I do so within my means and in full leathers. I treat the yellow line like a guardrail, and I typically don't pass a car unless I am signaled by the driver. The only time I'll break that rule is if the driver is being intentionally rude and refuses to yield, and only with ample visibility. That may still be wrong, but I'm not travelling a thousand miles to ride behind grandma in a Buick at 20 mph or a cruiser parade that truly believes they really do own the road.

It seemed to me that this weekend was a little different from past years. The cage drivers were extremely courteous, while many cruiser riders were completely unyielding to faster bikes and/or riders. Parade duty was rampant, especially on Saturday. Lines of slow, heavy bikes taking the average turn at 15-20 mph, then accelerating away in an ear-splitting frenzy of open drag pipe flatulence. I actually witnessed a sport bike rider methodically trying to make his way through a line of cruisers, and each time he would try to go up one spot the cruiser rider would do his best to hold the guy out on the yellow line. Pathetic.

I have nothing against the bikes themselves, just some of the moronic idiots who show up at the assless chap costume party with the attitude that they own the road simply because they showed up with 15 of their RUB buddies. How about sharing the road a little? God forbid you make a couple of new friends...

Anonymous said...

I had a huge problem with the cruiser parade trying to hold me off from passing by running hard out of the turns and trying to hold me in the other laneover the double lines. I came all the way from daytona beach florida to ride the gap , and i still have to deal with the asshole harley/cruiser parade . Its just the same as bike week here

Anonymous said...

OK, Time to chime in here. Who here, hanging out at the gas station or overlook, did'nt see some yahoo blasting up towards the Gap doing a wheelie, reving their cruiser to ear drum shattering levels, or riders racing off as if at the start of a 500GP race. I recall some ying-yang on a super-motard from New york or some god-awful other place, doing countless wheelies as he blasted off upwards to bliss. How many riders did you see accelerate off, blasting around cars as they raced up to the first corner, only to slow down....you damn well know you heard them and their engine wind down!!!! Is that what this place represents? A place to show off? Show offs are whats ruining the Gap, and from what I can tell, it's the magnet for these type idiots, as thats what predominatly runs rampant there! Idiots! Those who don't fit that description, I apologize. There are alot of sensible riders out there, yes. But, anyone who would try and defend that kind of nonsense is no better, and you know it. God

Bravo12 said...

OK, I can agree that this guy was just pushing it a little, and made a mistake - it happens. Just glad nobody got seriously hurt because of it.

But, to those that think making mistakes like this on a regular basis is part of riding, you need to take a friggen MSF course or go to a track day and learn how to ride. If you can't stay in your lane on the Dragon, you are exceeding you limits (unless you are intentionally using the entire road, in which case you are simply an asshat).

Anonymous said...

Glad the dude is OK. Great Pic. I think as long as people are willing to accept the consequences of their actions anyone who would criticize someone for making a mistake is a hypocrit and needs to look in the mirror and find better ways to feel better about themselves then chest-thumping about mistakes other people make.

If a guy wants to ride with no gear, its his perogative. His skin, His Bike, His Life. In this case, if he takes financial responsibility for any damage to the car, he's man-ed up and done the right thing.

I won't kick the kid while he's down for a mistake, or for his misfortune. But anyone who came on here and criticized the kid... Look in the mirror. Nik from Milwaukee

Anonymous said...

Well.... I think the SUV driver should have been dragged out of his vehicle and beaten severely.

This road belongs only to motorcycles, and riders without gear. Cages create an unreasonable hazard and should be banned.

We all make mistakes and should therefore feel sorry for this fellow and his unfortunate experience. We should find out who he is and send him money.

After all, if they wanted us give a damn about anyone else in this country they would have erected a statue of responsibility rather than a statue of liberty. By doing the "liberty thing" they set the tone, not us.

We're just doing what we like to do, no harm in that.

Glad this guy was able to walk away..

From My limited experience on the Gap, you can get out of shape easily even within the speed limit. I read your pointers about riding which helped out alot on my Monday ride.
I am trying to hug the white but seem to be hugging the yellow at the end of the turn on the switchbacks going towards the store. The white line has a strange feel and this is causing me to slop out of the turn and finish late.

Any suggestions?

Try not to get so worked up by others y'all. To the guy that crashed, don't be so quick to get offensive. You seemed level-headed and responsable after the accident, so I stuck up for you. Some of these guys can be pretty harsh, but they haven't been nearly as rough on you as they could be. Most are just looking out for you and all of us.

About being able to use/sell the photo, yes it is in a public area and doesn't even show his face. Even if it did show the face, it's still legal to sell. There is great referrence material on this issue at:

http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm

I did talk to him after the accident and one of the first things he said was that he was heading for the shoulder of the road, but the SUV swerved that way also trying to get out of the way.

Darryl Cannon aka "killboy" said...

I wouldn't recommend driving ON the white line, just concentrate on staying closer to that side of your lane.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the response.
I am riding a Naked Sport and am hitting the white line at the apex. The road as you know comes up out of the turn which is where I am finishing my turn a little weak.
I am not ready to light the hair up and do not really plan to. I do however want to be able to negotiate these tight rights without putting myself into harms way. I certainly don't want to become your next great shot. It was an amazing photo but nowhere I want to be.

No offense intended dude, but it would have been better for you to simply thank God, count your blessings, and take your deserved medicine.

1) Leathers work. To suggest that they are worthless on the dragon because there isn't that much room to slide is the most idiotic thing I've read in a long time. Good leathers have impact armor and spine protection. Sometimes they actually can save you from a broken neck. Stating that leathers suck and suggesting that they don't do any good tells me you've never owned or used them, because you would never say that if you had. You'd know how well they really do work.

2) You screwed up, blew the curve, and hit a car. End of story. Sometimes it happens, but most of the time you don't hear about it because there wasn't a car on the other side of the yellow line. Unfortunate timing for sure, but that is the risk we all take.

As for the brakes, if after your rear brake failed you felt you didn't have enough lean angle left to tighten your line and scrub speed, and instead you decided to grab the front brake and stand the bike up YOU WERE GOING TOO FAST AND/OR RIDING BEYOND YOUR CAPABILITIES!!! Most motorcycle accidents occur in the same manner that yours did. The rider goes wide in a curve, panics, grabs a handful of brakes and stands the bike up. Often after leaving the road the end result is a high side. In 80% of these accidents the bike was capable of doing what the rider wasn't. In other words the bike would have made it. Get some training, learn to trust your tires, and above all else learn that pushing the bike over farther in that situation and risking a low-side is a better alternative to standing the bike up and hitting a car, or worse yet launching it off of the road into a ravine. If you aren't in the "leathers suck" camp and are actually wearing a set a low side is no big deal. Certainly not as big of a deal as hitting a car or playing superman into a ravine. I don't mean to be an ass about this and I'm truly sorry you had an accident, but you need to get a clue. Education and practice are key. Ego gets you killed. Pushing the bike over farther and applying some maintenance throttle is counter-intuitive and a bitch for some people (myself included) to learn. Practice in a controlled environment. Practice until you do it instinctively. It could save your life.

Your mastery of riding and your mastery of the written word are on an equal playing field! The latter is funny if that is the way you intended it, but the former is dangerous. If you intend to stay on a bike please, for the sake of those who care about you, get some formal riding instruction!

man that makes for a good background on my computer...thank goodness no one got hurt!

to the one who says that the gap doesn't belong to cages, that it should be motorcycle only

you better get out and start pushing then because the fastest thing across the gap is a car, not a bike

i feel safer blazing my suv through there than i do my bike, and i can get my suv across it quicker than i can my gsxr..i dont' push it nearly as hard on the bike as i do the suv

do i let those who come up behind me who are faster than me by...every single time..do i expect the same when some sportbikers hold me up..you better believe it

this guy got lucky..plain and simple..he's lucky the guy driving the suv was paying attention and wasn't still on the gas and making him a new ornament on the grill

for a new rider starting out..do not get twist of the wrist by keith code..it is written in a way that is really only understood by some with race track or track time ..get the pace it's a much better book and explains it all a bit better

darryl..absolutely awesome photograph though, completley awesome

stay within your limits, do not ride over them, do not cross the double yellow through blind curves and respect others up there..do that and everyone has fun..dont' do it and the results are more than obvious

I was in your corner, everyone makes mistakes but it sounds like you are making excuses now. 1. Where’s you’re license plate? 2. If you feel you weren’t in the wrong then you don’t need to defend yourself to this group especially in this way. Everyone makes mistakes and you certainly did. 3. If you’re going to rant off @ people especially calling them ‘hillbillies’ you might want to use spell check and @ least come across as intelligent. 4. Ripping on the cops has no place in your post. They weren’t involved and may one day be there to save your ass when you crash again due to ‘rear brake failure.’
5. Bragging you can outride a lot of people here doesn’t help your case. You want to prove it, go to the track. 6. As a ‘truly experienced’ rider I can’t say I would have done things different. You bottled it up you made it out OK. I subscribe to the any landing you walk away from is a good one but don’t go on about how much better a rider you are than most. That’s just stupid and makes you look reckless. 7. how do you know he wasn’t behind you. Did you have that rare occasion to be out on Deal’s Gap all alone? 8. If you have leathers use them. ‘Nuff said.

As for beating the SUV driver, whoever said that is an IDIOT. He/she was the responsible and safe vehicle operator in this incident, driving well within their limits and most likely saved this riders life.

Nearly every track record is held by a car, not a bike. Sportscars easily carry more corner speed than bikes, but bikes generally out-accelerate cars. If you can get a car to accelerate strong, and still corner well, it will give most bikes hell on a tight road like Deal's Gap. Believe me, I'm there a lot. ;)

Thanks for clarifying. I can get my elbow down just fine, its getting it back up thats the problem. ;)

Last I had heard (several months ago) he was about 20 seconds quicker on his CBR overall than his RX-7, but now that hes got his gixxer 1000 race bike he may have expanded those times. Watching him in either vehicle is extremely impressive to say the least. Having both the fastest 2 and 4 wheeled times through the gap is quite an accomplishment.

WHAT IS THE OVERALL TIMES? ANYONE?

Of course you were riding fast! Too fast for your abilities!
If ya think ya can't make the turn, lean a little farther.
Keep your foot off the rear brake.
The people in the van should have held your dumbass there till the LEO's arrived......

So much for the brotherhood of motorcyclists- I think I'll go find a gang to join.

Bet you never imaged this many comments on one photo. It shows the passion motorcycles have on people who at other times seem 'normal'. Comments have been to the extreme on both sides. After riding for nearly 40 years I do a much better job of not getting into a situations like this one, but the 'biker passion' still requires me to push the limits when I ride. I hope he learns from his mistake and makes a better rider out of him. This is also the reason I very seldom ride on the weekends at the gap.

Good gawd, 100 comments! I wasn't even paying attention to the numbers. We also got 27,000 hits yesterday...more than double our previous record hit count.

"WHAT IS THE OVERALL TIMES? ANYONE?"

Well I think SHE did an over and back, plus came to a complete stop at the mid-point, waited the required 15 seconds to simulate a pit stop. After the clock was stopped the record time was determined by:
- taking the time dividing by pie
- add/subtract weight bonus time
- add/subtract tire size bonus time

Resulting in a time of 7:21.

Those calculations do not include the use of the Y-shaped "flux-capacitor" do they?

Anonymous said...

Don't be silly. They used apple pie instead of cherry pie so the value for the flux-capacitor was factored in.

Being guilty of passing everything in sight when I have been down there on the Motard, and even being from New York or some equally bad place. I have a hard time understanding the hostility on the forum. All of the times I have been down to the Gap and enjoyed the road I have never once ecountered any grief from other riders, or heard any of the negitive type comments that I am reading hear. I have always heard the gear arguement and it should always be mentioned. Do all of the smiling faces at the look out and gas station change when you get home from the Gap. Personally I have never been to a place to ride with as much positive energy and better people in my life than I have met down at the Dragon, I have enjoyed your company and your enthusiasm for our sport. You would never guess from reading this forum that it is the same place I visit and and love.

Excellent point Bob. I've never seen such hostility as I've seen on here. Most of these people would never DREAM of speaking to someone face-to-face like that.

I'm considering disabling anonymous posting, but I hate force everyone to register with blogger.com before they can leave a comment.
