Happened to me in a 66 Mustang.
Bearing seized and superheated the spindle till it snapped.

I though when the bearings fail you get grinding? How do you go from grinding to the shaft breaks?

Jason - lol! Knoxville area has the worst air quality in the nation. The air obviously kills brain cells and removes sense of humor. I see that a lot amongst the know-it-all locals in that area. Guess being inbred, breathing that foul air and never seeing the outside world turns you very strange!

That is the suck. I'd ask if the dude remember to regularly grease the bearings as I'm sure they're not sealed, but if he's got a car like that, I'd be willing to bet he knows already. Probably just got a bad one. Glad that it didn't end up costing him the car.
