My dad stepped on one of these when I was about 5.... told me it was the "Devil's Cupcake", .....scared the shit out of me!!! One of the great memories of my father.

That is fungus. It lives undereground, invisible until it is time to release spores. If you stomp it you will release a cloud of spores.
