Best I could figure is paint, followed by two layers of reflective/high-traction media.

Glass beads are added to the paint for the reflectivity and (a little - very little) traction. Mostly reflectivity.

ACCBiker...you got it half right. The first gun is paint (on the right in the picture) and the other two guns are putting out glass beads that add retro reflectivity. However, the glass beads add ZERO traction...in fact, if you ever see a freshly painted line, stay the heck away from it! Those things are like little marbles and slippery as heck. But the beads are only there to make the paint reflective...no other reason.
