I heard those car tires...

...are just the ticket for increased performance combined with longevity.

Where's my popcorn. =)

That's the worst thing I can think of for somebody to do a motorcycle.

The place where we have our tire work done has huge signs saying they refuse to put car tires on bikes....no matter where you bought them....they are not going to contribute to your demise.

For you non-believers, take another look at the pic. Rather than focusing on how much of the tire is off the pavement, look at how much is still ON the pavement! Much more than a rounder.

It's not for everyone or everybike, but it is an excellent fit for this Captain's Rocket as well as my own.

Unless you've tried it, YOU DON'T KNOW so your opinion is worthless.

So I guess no one can have an opinion on the death penalty, then? Is your opinion on that subject worthless?

I have over 30,000 "car tar" miles
on my 2 Valkyries. I have yet to
die a flaming death. I can drag
my pegs at the Dragon, the Snake or
any of several twisties. Is it for
everybody? No. Will it work on any
bike? No. Does it work for me (and a
couple hundred others)on our
Valks? ABSOLUTELY!! I have NEVER
heard of one incedent where a car
tire on a Valk was the cause of an
accident...period. Anybody that
says it "won't work" is just plain
ignorant.

I'd bet the turn in on that thing is excellent.

Hey KB, pass some of that popcorn over here LOL.

I notice someone mentioned to look at the current contact patch. It is just as big, if not bugger then on a stock (round) tire. My next rear tire will be a car tire. 95% of my driving is in a straight line ( Kansas ). 8,000 miles from a $160 tire is BS.

Car Tires on bikes is STUPID

Car tires on "some" bikes is stupid. I could never see a C/T on a CR, but on some cruisers (Valks, G/W's, EG's) they work fine. I have about 44K miles on a C/T on my GL1800, but then I live in Florida where 99% of my riding is in a straight line. There is nothing more irritating than destroying a good M/T in 4-6K miles riding boring roads. If I lived in an area where I was in the twisties all the time, I would NEVER run a C/T, but for some of us, it just makes sense.

Don't dismiss the idea outright. Remember, not too long ago heavier than air craft was a fantasy, spaceflight was not possible and cooking by radio waves was magic.

Now, back to my popcorn!

Dennis, that's the best argument that you could come up with? typical knee-jerk, ignorant response. Come on, come up with something relevent.

Pops, why? Maybe it's stupid for you and your bike but not for everybody else. Expand your horizons a little. What if a person said, "Dual purpose bikes are stupid on the Dragon"? That would be narrow minded opinion. (btw, Dennis, this is a relevent response unlike yours)

I have to ask those of you who are only getting 4-8k miles out of tires on your cruisers and tourers, what style of tires are you using? My dad has over 20k with Dunlop Elite II's on his Voyager, with some life left in them. And he has done everything from interstate traveling to the Dragon. Just a thought. Not knocking anyone's choice of tire, even though I probably wouldn't chose a car tire.

tdragger said...

On some cruisers there are only a limited choice. For instance, the Triumph Rocket III can only choose from a Metzler M880 or an Avon Cobra. Both offer great grip but awful longevity. After replacing 2 rear tires in 1 year at $250+ a pop, going to the darkside (car tire) was an obvious choice.

Dennis said...

tdragger- No, just pointing out the lunacy of your "absolute" statement, which most folks would strongly disagree with... BTW, speaking of ignorant, the spelling is 'relevant,' not 'relevent.' Have a great 4th.

tdragger said...

Ok Dennis, your point is valid. Perhaps my statement was too harsh. I should rephrase it. How about, "Driving on a car tire is something that has to be experienced in order to give an informed opinion on. Those unfamiliar with the pros and cons of their particular application may fall back upon preconceived notions that may, in fact, turn out to be incorrect." Better?

EvilZed said...

Well, tdragger, that makes sense financially, if you don't have a high mileage m/c tire to chose from. But does it really handle the same on a car tire? Seems to me like the transition to the edge would feel different than rolling on over on a motorcycle tire.

Dennis said...

tdragger- well done, dude. I don't know you, but I was trying to stir you up a little, just as I would any of my friends. Nice response. Have a great weekend, and keep the shiny side up.

Evil, honest question that we darksiders get alot. First and foremost the standard answer is "it depends on your application." Would I put a car tire on a sport bike? No way. Not an appropriate application for it. Does it work for a Rocket III, Valkyrie, Goldwing, etc? Yes. Does it handle like a regular tire? No, it doesn't but you get used to it. Possibly the more appropriate question is, "Does it provide as much traction in all phases of movement as a standard tire?" The emphatic answer is "For my particular application, it far exceeds the capabilities of a standard m/c tire in all phases of movement!!" It corners better, it starts better, it stops way better, it handles wet roads way better, etc. Contrary to what you might think, you really don't notice the transition to the edge because it really doesn't do that. The only thing you notice more is slow speed movement over irregular surfaces. That's it.
