What is the shock thing on the side?

Looks like some kind of peg movement device.

And what's with the red tie-down strap that looks to be linking the front brake caliper mount with the handlebar?

Love the engine-turned treatment to the pipes!

OK, I get it... the tie-downs are for drag strip launches, reducing weight x-fer to the rear?

Bet that comes in handy in the TN/NC mountains. File that under "looks kewl, serves little function for 99.9% of my miles".

Anyone notice the 1720 on the tail. Assuming a bumped displacement, or is there another reason for that?

That shock looking thing up front is his highway pegs. Look at the peg he's got is foot on, then that thing - they are the same.

I think the 'tricky' title refers to the turbo and intercooler that are snugged up in there. Look in front of the radiator and you'll see a 2nd one, connected to his air passage in the frame.

Not sure about that red tie down though

The tie down is surely for drag launches. As stated above helps cut the weight xfr and helps reduce the launch wheelie
