Nah he was headed toward the store, although the lane choice might mean a second contribution if he's not careful.
Pulling parts off the tree is def. bad karma, and we've seen parts that were bolted on with wood screws disappear a few weeks later. =/

(Though I have seen folks take stuff from the tree, it doesn't really bother me. It's not like there's a shortage.)
