Random Update - Jan. 09, 2007

Big update this week, and there's not much to shoot this time of year, so don't get used to it. ;)

We had a great time in New York over New Years. It was the first time either of us had really been there, so we were a bit apprehensive of course, but it wasn't bad at all...except for the crazy crowd control around Times Square on New Year's Eve day. The police had it all shut off and routing people all around the place so everyone was just running around like the lost tourists we all were. We quickly gave up on that endeavor, it was freezing anyway, and booked a ride on one of the charter boats to watch the fireworks from the harbor and see the Statue of Liberty at night. (pics below of course)

The highlight of our whole trip was the day spent with our new best friend Al Navarro the first day there. He gave up a whole day to shuttle us around in his SUV and show us some of the sights of Manhatten...just goes to show there is southern hospitality to be found everywhere.

The motorcycle show had it's ups and downs. Seemed like a low turnout, but we got to meet some cool folks as always, and we get to play huge know-it-alls when people have questions, so that's exhilarating. Of course there are the few that somehow believe they know more than we do about what goes on here, and will not be convinced otherwise. It's fascinating to see all the different mentalities, and how some people seem to just WANT to believe in bad things...wrecks and fatalities regularly get blown out of proportion, and since we base our lives and business in the area, we're suddenly not trustworthy. Like lying would somehow go unnoticed. One guy said "So you're trying to get people to come down there and spend money!" I said "Yes exactly, and you'll spend a hell of a lot less down there than you do up here!" He laughed and agreed.

But yes, the money thing was crazy. We hit a TGI Fridays near Times Square, and everything on the menu was exactly double what it is down here. Mac and Cheese? Nine bucks. God help you if you order the fillet. On the other hand, you could get 7 "I Love New York" t-shirts for $10!

That's it from me...it's late and I'm gonna crash out. We might get Lori to write up her version of the NY trip if enough of you folks speak up. I think she could offer a different perspective on things, but she doesn't think anyone wants to hear from her.

On to the highlights!

Next time you go to New York. Avoid all of the chain restaurants. The local places are cheaper and have better food. Eating around Times Square is generally a lose, but there are one or two good places in the area (mmmmmm Virgil's Barbecue).

I still think a motard would be the right vehicle to navigate Manhattan. :-)

Did you get mugged? If not, you missed out on a big part of the NYC experience.

I have a photo question about lighting at these big indoor shows?
How can I get some light on the subject? The upper parts are fairly well lit, but the lower parts and any shadows are very dark.

Oh, and let lori speak.

I never really used a flash at this one because it tends to be over-powering even when metered down and diffused, but that is about the only way to add light to the darker/lower parts.

You could also have someone carry around a reflector and shine it up under the bikes, but that's kinda cumbersome. ;)
