The colors were originally pretty muted...

The deeper you go, the less yellow and red light there is. Eventually green gets filtered out too, and all you're left with is blue, but we didn't go that deep. Everything looked bluish-green, so it took some work in Photoshop to return the colors. A nearby lightsource like a flash really helps, but it can also illuminate the particles floating in the water in front of the camera.
