It is crystal clear from the photo that Darryl, despite his toys, isn't nearly as fast as he would like us to think. In fact, he is super slooow.
Proper etiquette is to yield to faster traffic. You of all people should know this, Darryl. I am deeply disappointed in you, and I'm sure this rider is also.
Man you know there aren't many pull-offs on that side of the road. I did feel bad though...half a second later he cratered into my rear bumper. ;)
Wow, a deer, dog, cat or mechanical problem and you would have had something attached to your bumper there Darryl. Tailgaters are as dangerous as DUIs...
silverrocket - do you ever just chill out and stop bitching at people for not doing things your way? seriously... give it a rest
The concern is understandable, and appreciated, silver. The circumstances go a little deeper though. There is a trust here that has been built over years...the kind of trust that is rarely found, but too often assumed...the latter can really get a person in trouble.
He knows that if a deer/dog/cat did run out in front of me, which has honestly never happened to me once in all my years on the Gap, I would not "bow up" in the road in front of him.
There are a handful of people who ride tightly together like this on occasion, and it creates a lot of...discussion.
Not ONCE has it caused an accident that I am aware of. Pretty strong evidence if you think about it.
Sure something COULD happen, but life is short, and you have to weigh the risks with the fun-factor. The fact that we ride is a risk that probably should be avoided. History has shown that there are far greater risks on this road, like lane crossers and oversize vehicles, which actually HAVE caused accidents, and attribute little to the fun-factor.
Where should we focus our concern? =)
darryl, if you want sometime, we can mount my camcorder to your car for a couple runs. I do it almost every week in my wrx....
If you ride this road day in and day out two things WILL happen.
You WILL crash.
You WILL gain some confidence in the people you ride with or stop riding with them.
It is hard for someone who does not come out and ride the Gap to understand the accepted and unaccepted behavior.
My advice is to come out and ride it 30 or 40 times a season and then give us your two cents. Otherwise it is speculation at best.
engineno09s comment---"silverrocket - do you ever just chill out and stop bitching at people for not doing things your way? seriously... give it a rest"
The only comment I'll put to that is this, you sure did let your immature age shine through, if I had a guess, I'd say 16-24..... For the most part, I pat good riders on the back, I do make recommendations on form and gear but not half as often as it is needed, as to help others not get hurt, from not knowing. If I can help 1 person, that's great. As far as bitching at people as you say, I don't give a crap how you ride with expressing the thoughts you have, I do however get a decent feeling from helping the innocent good mature people, in not getting hurt from idiot drivers or from their own bad techniques, like the one that almost took my life in April of this year...
silveRRocket, I am sure that most people understand your concern as it is real. But honestly, you tend to point out the obvious and it is a bit too much at times. I say this in the way that the rider in the shot has his knee on the ground, full leathers, and is control behind someone we all know that is also in control.
That being said your comment was, well as nicely as I could say, not needed. As to not draw this kind of criticism to yourself you could have reworded your comment, "hey looks like you too were having a blast, be careful when you guys play hard like this, don't wanna lose you!" and nothing would have been deemed a negative. I don't get to ride your "Gap" that often but we have one that is similar here in Bristol called shadyvalley that I do ride all the time. I understand the trust and fun factor...as well as the risk...and I am 34. Not someone way young that has no idea.
OOPS!! Computer glitch!!
If anyone rides the Gap regularly they would know that Phil(the guy on the bike behind Darryl) is one of the smoothest and fastest riders on the Gap and he also knows Darryl is one of the best drivers so I am sure all was well.By the way Darryl I would like one of those rides you are giving out!!! I am the guy that used to have the maroon Beemer K1200LT that was stolen now I ride a silver BMW K1200LT like your Uncle's I believe.I hang out with Dave Allison so next time you are through on a slow day I may have to hitch a ride.
Thanks
Ron
Oh without a doubt, whoever that is on the bike is an awesome rider, got the proper technique also wearing full gear and I was hopeful even before I made my original comment that they are friends. My point I was trying to make is this, no matter how good you are, you can never tell when something that's out of your control is going to go wrong. Thus my Dog, cat, rubber 1/4 inch timing belt breaking yadda, yadda ya is going to happen. Taking inventory of "fun" factor vs. "dull" life. Hell yeah I say have fun, it's just another person "having fun" almost took my life from a move almost similar to this one that we're debating. My point, have fun but keep others "injury" risk out of the equasion.
