Weekly Update - June 17, 2009
Photos from the past 6 years are available in Our Store here, these are the highlights from last week.
Another great weekend overall, nice break from all the rain we had earlier in the year. A few groups and a few incidents, but nothing major on the Dragon. Hwy 28 has claimed 3 lives this year, all within the past few weeks, and I think there have been a couple on the Cherohala Skyway, but zero on the Gap so far. As always, be careful out there, especially on the surrounding roads, which always rack up more accidents and fatalities than the Dragon.
This weekend there's not much on the calendar for groups...a local truck brigade Friday and Neon SRT people Sunday, but Saturday is also the big Cherohala Challenge bicycle ride. These folks start in Tellico, come across 129 into NC, then on over to 143 to ride all they way across the Skyway back to Tellico...a 100+ mile loop over 5400 feet high! Most of them will be finished with the Dragon part by noon, but they'll be trickling across the Skyway all day. It's just a one-day-a-year thing, so show some love and help motivate these amazing riders. And don't forget the annual Cole Evans Memorial Benefit Concert this Sunday at Big Daddy's on 411/129 around 3pm. Hope to see some of you there.
On to the highlights!

That Cherohala Challenge bike race sounds pretty epic. On my last trip down to the Dragon I also did some of the Blue Ridge Parkway and saw a few cyclists riding up the looooooong climbs over near Mt Mitchell State Park. Amazing to see that. As a cyclist myself (mountain biker), I know just how challenging it is to ride in that type of terrain. Wish I could be down there to help cheer the Cherohala riders on!
