Wow, nice illustration of your point. This should be included in any driver or rider education class.
Image all the tickets THP could profit from if they actually stopped commercial trucks on the Dragon. Maybe that's the key, putting Commercial license plates on bikes, to get immunity from prosecution?
you wouldn't have to be passing there to get into trouble! Looks like even if you were keeping in your lane and going a moderately safe speed you'd end up slinging around the corner and head on into the cab of the truck or off into the trees. Looks like if it was timed just right there'd be no way to avoid it.
True dat danielle.
If onlt we could mount a couple of mini Stinger missles up front for "clearing" obstructions
Nice illustration shot!
However, I just wanted to tell you something I don't know if you are aware of or not. My dad drove a big rig for over 30 years. He was MADE by his dispatchers to run over Hwy 129 for many years or be fired or reprimanded. The reason was that when the 'corp' dispatchers were routing out the quickest and shortest routes, HWY 129 automatically comes to their mind. However no matter how many times my dad or any others protested the route, it was a no win situation. If they deviated from the planned route by dispatchers, the bosses would know because of the milage and computer programs in the truck.
So yes, it is a dangerous road for them and us but you have to stop and wonder how many of these guys and gals REALLY don't want to be there but have no choice.
Saint: Oh definitely! We've said it over and over - They don's WANT to be here! It's not totally their fault. There are signs, but they're weak...'suggesting' they 'consider' an alternate route. It's up to our DOT and our government to take this seriously, and at least require them to have an escort vehicle...they do it many other places.
Lori's dad drives a low-boy rig out of Robbinsville, and when he has to run over to Knoxville/Maryville, there is only one logical route. But he uses common sense! He only goes across very late at night, with lots of flashing lights, or he'll get us to escort him if he must go during daylight hours.
There is a logical way to handle the problem, but it isn't happening at a state or federal level, and I guess it'll take someone dying before they do.
It seems with the high risk of an accidents or tickets that the trucking companies would not want damage to thier vehicles or at least thier insurance companies would not want the risk of lawsuits. They would save money in the long run to take an alternative route.Still a great shot to illustrate the danger of blind corners!! Great work Darryl,Jack,Lori, and Dave.
Maybe these drivers need to tie these dispatchers and bosses in the front seat and take them for a ride over 129 and let them just see how dangerous it is. Or better yet put them on a motorcycle and let them meet one of their own trucks on a curve! Then maybe they would make sure they at least had an escort or traveled at night like Lori's dad.
KB,maybe you should hang a couple of the pictures in some of the area stores where the new riders can see them. Use your captions of "Safe to pass??" and "NO! TRUCK!!!" We are just proud that killboy and his crew do all they can to keep everyone safe. Remembering Lori's accident just shows that we can never do enough. As hard as you try, accidents will still happen so everyone please watch out for each other and stay safe.
Absolutely love KBmom's comment. I've seen the mornings and nights my dad would come in and be ready to strangle his dispatchers. After several fights finally, very stubbornly, starting going another route.
BTW, KB, just wanted to tell Lori congrats on the ride. My husband is the firefighter/paramedic who stopped to help her that day.
Hope to see ya'll on the Dragon soon!
Darryl,
Has this pic been sent to the trucking company?
If not, I;ll do the footwork if you send me the hi res image to get the info from.
Hey PJ,
None of the shots show the ID numbers well enough to make out, but it says "Padda Carriers Inc. - Missasauga, ON" on the side of the door. Not positive about the Missasauga spelling, but they were Canadian. I tried to find some info on Padda Carriers without much luck.
